Prosecutors: Guard Acted In Self-Defense In Fatal Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Prosecutors say a Detroit security guard was acting in lawful self-defense when she shot a man stealing building materials, but she didn't have a permit to lawfully carry a weapon.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday it has charged 30-year-old Dominique Davis of Detroit with carrying a concealed weapon.

According to investigators, Davis on Tuesday observed 52-year-old Melvin Johnson stealing items from a construction site near an apartment complex in the area of Woodward Avenue and McNichols Road and loading them on his truck.

Davis stopped the truck with her car, officials said, and Johnson tried to back over her. Prosecutors say she shot him in the right shoulder and immediately reported the incident to police.

Johnson was pronounced dead at a hospital.
