Standoff Turns Deadly For Man In Shelby Township

SHELBY TWP (WWJ) - A Shelby Township man is dead after a several hour standoff Monday morning.

The situation began around 3:30 a.m. at the Shelby Forest Manufactured Home Community off Schoenherr between 22 Mile and 23 Mile roads.

SWAT teams were called out after a woman said her husband assaulted her with a weapon during a domestic dispute.

Police gained access around 8 a.m. and found the man dead inside the home.

Neighbors, including Debra Sloan, were told to evacuate the area.

Sloan said the 40-yr-old man suffered from PTSD, stemming from his work as a first responder to the 9/11 attacks in New York City.

Another resident says she sent her two high school kids off to class, but a younger child is staying home.

"I'm definitely not sending him to school he's 14-years-old ... and he's staying home today. This is far too serious," she said.

Police are continuing to investigate but say it began as a domestic dispute between the man and a woman.

It is not clear if the man took his own life in the standoff or was shot by police as the investigation continues.
