Detroit Residents Encouraged To Attend Empowering Neighborhood Police Officer Summit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police think the best way to keep neighborhoods safe is if residents work with hand-in-hand with officers.
Chief James Craig is hosting a Neighborhood Police Officer Summit Empowerment Forum on Saturday to update residents about crime trends, crime mapping resources and crime prevention strategies.
The bottom line, according to Commander Todd Bettison, is that crime goes down when police get help from residents. Key programs, like Project Green Light and Cease Fire Detroit are also instrumental, he said.
"With Cease Fire Detroit, we educate the community about what is going on over on the east side of Detroit, especially our ninth precinct and fifth precinct, how we've really been able to really lower crime as a result of that program and how that's spreading city wide," Bettison told WWJ's Laura Bonnell.
Saturday's summit will also include working groups and break-out sessions that will focus on critical community issues and explore methods of how the community can better work with the police.
The summit runs from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., October 22 at the Detroit Marriot Hotel at the Renaissance Center. Parking is free. A complimentary lunch will also be provided, but advance registration is requested.
