Drug Take Back Day: Drop Off Unwanted Prescriptions At Sites Across Michigan

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police departments around Michigan will collect unwanted prescription drugs Saturday at more than 130 locations.

There is no charge, and no questions will be asked.

Only pills and other solids, like patches, can be brought to the collection sites. Liquids and needles or other sharps will not be accepted.

The drop-off will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on October 22. For a list of sites in Michigan, click here and follow the links to a database.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says the home medicine cabinet is a common plan for prescription drug abusers to find drugs. Last April, during its 11th Take Back Day, the DEA and over 4,200 of its community law enforcement partners collected 893,498 pounds (about 447 tons) of unwanted prescription drugs. Since the program began six years ago, about 6.4 million pounds (about 3,200 tons) of drugs have been collected.
