Rainfall, Beaver Activity Contribute To UP Trail Washout

MORAN, Mich. (AP) - Recent rainfall has contributed to the washout of part of an off-road vehicle trail northwest of the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reports Sunday that the washed-out portion of the St. Ignace to Trout Lake Off-Road Vehicle Route about one mile north of Moran in Mackinac County is closed until repairs can be made.

DNR recreation trails specialist Paul Gaberdiel says beaver activity also played a part in the trail washing out.

Gaberdiel says high water volume and stream flow thwarted an attempt to fix the washout. Repairs can't be made until the water recedes.

Off-road vehicle riders traveling between St. Ignace and Trout Lake can use the Burma Grade and the Carp River Truck Trail as an alternate route.
