U.P. Community Will Unveil Sign To Honor Poor At Cemetery

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. (AP) - A burial site for hundreds of poor people in an Upper Peninsula city will be marked with a special sign.

The Chippewa County Historical Society and the city of Sault Ste. Marie will hold a ceremony Tuesday at a potter's field in Riverside Cemetery. There are no grave markers or monuments.

After the sign is installed, visitors will be able to pause and reflect on the people buried there from 1890 to 1935. Caroline Grabowski, president of the historical society, tells The Evening News that the stories of the deceased "just break your heart."

She says many were immigrants from Europe who helped build Sault Ste. Marie. Grabowski says they deserve "recognition" and a "blessing."
