Drivers Invited To Line Up For $10,000 In Free Gas

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) One Detroit Credit Union is rewarding metro Detroit drivers with $10,000 in free gas this week.

The Refi My Ride Gas Giveaway will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016, at an undisclosed location in Highland Park. The location will be revealed at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Customers who visit the gas station will each receive up to $20 in free gas to fill up their tanks, first come, first served.

"People can come and get in line, we're basically just keeping count of how many cars we can do, then we're going to cut off the line," said Schannon Love, a One Detroit Credit Union spokeswoman.

The giveaway is meant to promote a car refinance program, and highlight the lack of access to public transportation.

"Public transportation in our neighborhoods is almost non-existent," said Hank Hubbard, One Detroit Credit Union president and CEO. "Access to a reliable car is critical to bridge all of the most basic market gaps we see – unemployment, healthy food, education, affordable financial services and more."

With current gas prices, those who participate in the Refi My Ride Gas Giveaway will receive about 10 gallons of free gas. For many drivers, that's almost an entire tank.

"We know time is a valuable commodity to folks in our community," said Hubbard. "We didn't want them to be burdened by lengthy, complicated paperwork. Most of the information for the pre-screening questionnaire are details that a person would have readily available at their fingertips, so they can complete it on their phone and find out right away whether Refi My Ride is right for them."

Although the Refi My Ride program is open only to those who live, work, worship or volunteer in Wayne County, or those who work in the communicating arts field, everyone is welcome to attend the Refi My Ride Gas Giveaway on Nov. 2.
