Man Charged With Killing Detroit Ceasefire Advocate Who Had Hands Raised In Air
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 35-year-old man accused of killing a well-known ceasefire advocate in Detroit has been remanded to jail on premeditated murder charges.
Floyd Darnell Nix, of Roseville, was arraigned Friday in 36th District Court on charges of first degree murder, felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the fatal shooting of Jeremaine Tilmon.
It's alleged that Nix fatally shot Tilmon, 39, around 2:30 a.m. Thursday. Prior to the shooting, Tilmon was standing and talking in front of his long-time friend's house in the 3600 block of Chatsworth, just north of Mack Avenue on the city's east side.
Tilmon had a brief encounter with Nix, according to investigators, during which Nix allegedly shot Tilmon while he was unarmed and holding both of his hands up in the air.
Tilmon was known as a ceasefire advocate in Detroit and was the step-father to Davontae Sanford, who was released from prison this summer after serving eight years for a quadruple murder he did not commit.
Nix is due back in court for a probable cause conference on Nov. 15, with a preliminary exam scheduled for Nov. 23.
