Ann Arbor Moving Forward With Deer Management Plan
ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) - The city of Ann Arbor plans to move forward deer management efforts next year that include another hunt.
The City Council on Monday night signed off on the plans, which include hiring sharpshooters to kill 100 deer and trap and sterilize another 60 deer.
This issue has divided the community, those in favor saying the overpopulation of deer has become a traffic hazard, while others say the city should look into more humane options to reduce their numbers.
City officials have said the number of deer-involved vehicle crashes has increased, while chronic wasting disease is getting closer to Ann Arbor.
A hunt last winter resulted in sharpshooters killing 63 deer. Some residents wanted a focus on nonlethal methods to control the deer population.
Word of Ann Arbor's deer management efforts comes as deer hunters head into the woods Tuesday for the start of Michigan's firearm deer hunting season, which runs through Nov. 30.
