Evacuations, Street Closures In Downtown Plymouth Due To Gas Main Break

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - Some downtown Plymouth businesses and residences were evacuated and streets were shut down, late Tuesday afternoon, as a repair crews worked on a gas main break.

A spokesperson for Consumers Energy says it happened behind the post office located on Harvey and Fleet streets. Business and apartment homes near Harvey, Fleet and Penniman were evacuated as a precaution.

City Manager Paul Sincock said several contractors were working in the area at the time of the break and that police and fire were on the scene before 5 p.m.

Harvey was closed between Penniman and Ann Arbor Trail and Penniman was closed between Harvey and Main Street as a result of the break, but all have since reopened to traffic.

Authorities said the gas was shut off and the all-clear was given before 6 p.m.

No injuries or illnesses were reported. It's unclear at this time what might have caused the break.
