I-696 Closing In Oakland County This Weekend For Bridge Work

OAK PARK (WWJ) - If your weekend  plans include travel through Oakland County, here's a heads up.

I-696 is closing this weekend between Coolidge Highway and Greenfield Road for bridge work, with the cities of Oak Park, Southfield and Huntington Woods all affected.

It's important to note that some freeway ramps will also be closed as part of the project.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says it's performing a detailed inspection of the bridge plaza superstructure supporting the plaza over I-696 at Church Street. This summer's construction project to waterproof the superstructure resulted in the discovery of deterioration of some of the beams.

MDOT says a detailed inspection will be performed to determine the extent of the deterioration, with a formal plan to address the problem to follow.

Travel restrictions Dec. 3-4 will include:

7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3
Westbound I-696 will be closed between Coolidge Highway and Greenfield Road. The M-1 (Woodward Avenue) and Coolidge Highway ramps to westbound I-696 will also be closed.

7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4
Eastbound I-696 will be closed between Greenfield Road and Coolidge Highway. The Southfield Road and Evergreen Road ramps to eastbound I-696 will also be closed.

Westbound I-696 motorists will be directed to exit at Coolidge Highway, then take the service drive (which becomes westbound 10 Mile Road) to northbound Greenfield Road, back to westbound I-696.

Eastbound I-696 motorists will be directed to exit at southbound Greenfield Road, then take eastbound 10 Mile Road to re-enter eastbound I-696, east of Coolidge Highway.
