Wayne State University police Chief Anthony Holt issued the honors for canine officer Collin Rose during a vigil Tuesday night at the Detroit school.

University President M. Roy Wilson says a $25,000 endowed scholarship is being created in Rose's name.

A visitation for Rose held Wednesday at Ford Field drawing officers and police dogs from across and beyond Michigan.

Visitation and a funeral Mass are planned Thursday morning at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores.

"The last 45 days two Detroit police officers killed in the line of duty and now tomorrow we memorialize the life of a Wayne State University police officer and just today, our officers out, protecting and serving, ambushed. And we are fortunate that none of the officers got hurt - given all the violence directed to police officers - we know that it's time for us in one united way - to just simply just say 'thank you - we appreciate the courageous job that you do each and every day,' and that's what this is about," said Detroit Police Chief James Craig Wednesday evening during the Detroit Public Safety Foundation annual awards dinner honoring Detroit's police, fire and EMS "first responders" for their service and valor.

Rose was shot Nov. 22 as he tried to arrest DeAngelo Davis, who faces murder and gun charges.
