DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A teenager who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and gun charges in the death of a Detroit woman who was shot in her car while waiting to pick up her son from basketball practice has been sentenced to 25 to 60 years in prison.

The Detroit News reports that 18-year-old Ralph Marshall was sentenced Tuesday. Last month he pleaded guilty in the January slaying of 43-year-old Erica Garner.

At the time he was charged, the Wayne County prosecutor's office says Garner was sitting in her car waiting for her 11-year-son — near 8 Mile and Ryan roads — when Marshall approached and tried to steal the vehicle.

Marshall shot her in the head through the driver's side window and fled the scene, but was later arrested.

Just days before that, investigators said Marshall and an 18-year-old friend carjacked a 21-year-old man at gunpoint in the 14400 block of Edmore, near 8 Mile Road and Gratiot Ave. The victim in that case was beaten and shot in the stomach, but lived.

Marshall's alleged accomplice in the Garner case was acquitted by a Wayne County jury in May.
