Man Busted By Undercover Cop In Jets Pizza Delivery Sting

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - A young Harper Woods man was arrested by an undercover police officer after he allegedly paid for pizza with counterfeit cash.

According to police, 18-year-old Martel Morgan on Wednesday placed an order with Jets Pizza , and when the delivery driver showed up — in the 20600 block of Kenmore — Morgan gave him a fake $100 bill. The driver didn't notice that the money was phony until he returned to the shop, on Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Woods.

That's when the driver called police to report the crime.

"While he was actually in the process of making the report with our officers, he was notified by another employee at Jets that the same person was calling back from the same location to place another order," said Harper Woods Police Chief Jim Burke.

An undercover Harper Woods detective got into the delivery driver's car, Burke. said, and delivered the second pizza. Morgan again paid with counterfeit $100 bill and was immediately taken into custody.

"I'll bet he was pretty surprised that he was going to be coming and spending the night with us," Burke said.

Morgan was arraigned in 32-A District Court Friday, charged with one count of uttering and publishing counterfeit bills or notes and one count of attempted uttering and publishing counterfeit bills or notes.

Morgan was released on a $5,000 personal bond with a GPS tether and a preliminary exam was scheduled for Dec. 28.

He face up to seven-and-a-half years in prison if convicted.
