QLINE Begins Testing Streetcars Along Woodward Avenue

DETROIT (WWJ) - You've been hearing about it for years, but today will mark the debut of the actual streetcars being used on the new QLINE along Woodward Avenue.

Following Tuesday morning's press conference, the red-and-white streetcar-- with no passengers -- will depart the Penske Technical Center. It will then be attached to a vehicle and towed the full 6.6-mile loop as part of the regular testing protocol.

The QLINE is scheduled to begin regular service next spring.

What's a QLINE streetcar like and how much does it cost?

  • It's 66 feet long, 87,000 pounds, and cost$3 million each
  • Capacity of 200 or more (Typical ridership expected is about 125)
  • $1.50 for "walk up" fee
  • Will travel speed limit on Woodward (35mph)
  • No steering wheel or pedals. (Hand controls)
  • No rear view or side mirrors. (10 high def cameras on streetcar)
  • Every streetcar vehicle will have a properly trained driver

What are the hours of operation and how often will it run?

  • The QLINE is expected to run Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday 6 a.m. to 12 a.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. with headways between 8 and 12 minutes
  • On Sunday, the streetcar will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with headways at 12 minutes
  • During special events the streetcar may come more frequently or operation hours might be adjusted
  • The streetcar will operate year-round and through winter snow events
