Variety Of Potato, Tortilla Chips Recalled Due To Salmonella Risk

DETROIT (WWJ) - There's a new recall involving a variety of flavored potato and tortilla chips that could make you sick this holiday season.

Old Dutch Foods says some of their snacks made with milk ingredients from seasoning component suppliers Valley Milk Products LLC pose a risk of salmonella contamination.

The chips were sold at grocery stores nationwide — including at Costco and Walmart. The french onion, cheddar and sour cream and ranch chips are involved in the recall.

Several other companies have already recalled processed foods — including products sold under house brands for Walmart, Aldi and Dollar Tree retailers — because of the powdered milk from Valley Milk Products.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Rarely, am infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the blood stream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Although no illnesses have yet been confirmed in connection with these products, Old Dutch Foods says the recall is "out of an abundance of caution"  with adherence with the company's strict quality standards.

Customers and consumers who have purchased the recalled product as identified in the affected product list should dispose of it immediately and may contact Old Dutch Foods Consumer Care toll-free at 1-877-228-2273 during regular business hours.
