Put A Smile On A Child's Face By Donating Your Running Medals

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Attention runners: Do you have racing medals just sitting around your house collecting dust?

If so, you could put a smile on a child's face by donating them.

If you have run a half marathon, marathon or completed a triathlon, consider donating your race medal to Medals4Mettle. The non-profit organization collects medals then passes them to ill children and adults who are in their own race.

Joe Burn, with the Detroit Chapter, said that the small gesture means a lot to a child fighting for their life.

"It's a way for people to know that there's others thinking of them," Burns said. "We run a race on our feet trying to get to the finish line and we know that they're here in the hospital and they're basically running a race from their bed, and their finish line is going home."

The Detroit Chapter started about eight years ago and has passed out more than 5,000 medals in southeast Michigan so far.
