5-Year-Old In Critical Condition After Attack By Several Pit Bulls

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police say a 5-year-old girl is critically injured after being attacked by several dogs at a east side Detroit home.

Police say the girl was with her father visiting a family friend when she was playing with the dogs Tuesday evening inside the home, in the 6200 block of Holcomb, near I-94 and Gratiot.  She then went outside with the dogs, and that's when they mauled her.

The child was taken to a hospital, where police say she was in critical condition. Police said it wasn't immediately clear how many dogs were involved in the attack.

Deputy Chief Renee Hall says the dogs' owner had had previously been warned about failing to turn over the animals following an earlier attack. She says he knew the pit bulls "had some level of aggression and he should have taken the necessary precautions."

Police said the man, who was taken into custody on earlier arrest warrants, is cooperating with investigators.
