Detroit Man Arraigned In Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed Baby Boy, Injured 3 Others

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man who crashed his car into a van killing a 6-month-old boy and injuring three others was driving on a suspended license, according to prosecutors.

Deandre L. Cody, 31, spoke little as he was arraigned in 36th District Court Monday afternoon on multiple charges in connection with the incident last Thursday. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

According to investigators, Cody disregarded a stop sign at Puritan and Archdale the night of Thursday, May 18, and crashed a Pontiac Grand Prix into a Chrysler Town and Country driven by a 40-year-old Detroit woman, with her kids in the backseat.

The children were ejected from the vehicle, police said, and were rushed to a local hospital along with their mother. The driver, her mother, and two girls ages two and four were treated for serious injures while their baby brother — identified as Demetrius Young, Jr. —  was pronounced dead.

Cody did not stop at the scene, police said, but was tracked down by detectives and arrested Friday night.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has charged him with the following: one count of failure to stop at an accident when at fault resulting in death, two counts of failure to stop at an accident resulting in serious injury or serious impairment, one count of driving with license suspended (DWLS) causing death, and two counts of DWLS causing serious injury.

"He drove away. What kind of person does that?" asked the children's aunt, Jewel Wilson, who was among family members at the courthouse Monday.

"They're two and four," she said, of the surviving siblings. "Do you have any idea the kind of trauma through going through right now? ...They're confused; they're scared"

Bond for Cody was set at $500,000 cash or surety. He will be back in court for a probable cause hearing scheduled for Tuesday, May 30.
