Caldwell Signs Multi-Year Contract Extension With Detroit Lions
DETROIT (97.1 THE TICKET/AP) - The Lions have built-in additional support to the foundation of their 2-0 Detroit team.
The Detroit Lions have confirmed that they have signed Jim Caldwell to a multi-year contract extension.
"The multi-year deal was signed months ago," says Schefter, "just not disclosed, per source. Deal silences speculation he was in last year of deal."
WWJ Sports Reporter Tony Ortiz calls this stability for the organization:
"The players are going to be happy about this extension because, I've talked to a number of players in the locker room over the years, to a man, they respect and like playing for Jim Caldwell," said Ortiz,"the biggest reason they like him, is because he shoots them straight - he doesn't b.s. them he doesn't play mind-games he tells the players exactly what he's thinking. When he asks about their families or asks about how they are doing -- there is a genuine care about that."
Caldwell has a 29-21 record in Detroit over three-plus season. He is 0-2 in the playoffs with a franchise that has won only one playoff game in six decades.
Caldwell helped the Indianapolis Colts reach the Super Bowl in his first year as an NFL coach and was fired two years later with a 26-22 record. He lost his job after the Colts went 2-14 in 2011 while Peyton Manning was out with a neck injury.
The NFC North-leading Lions (2-0) host the Atlanta Falcons (2-0) on Sunday in a matchup of two of the NFC's four undefeated teams.
The Lions signed quarterback Matthew Stafford to a multi five-year $135 million contract just before the start of the season.
