Davontae Sanford, Released From Prison In 2016 For Crime He Didn't Commit, Reportedly Shot

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Davontae Sanford.

Sanford was sent to prison as a teen for a crime that he did not commit and released last year.

Taminko Sanford-Timon, the mother of Davontae Sanford, posted on social media Saturday night that, "My son just been shot," but provided no details as to why, how, or where or when.

Police released written details of an incident which occurred around 9 p.m. in the King Homes complex on East Lafayette near Chene on the east side of Detroit. Police saying a woman living in the complex reported she heard gunshots outside, looked out, and saw a man running.

According to the police report "the victim was very uncooperative with arriving units, so (sic) therefore factual information about the shooting is still not known."

Police add, medics took the suspect to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where he is in temporary serious condition, with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Sanford was 14 when he was charged in the killings in 2007. He spent eight years in prison before he was released in June 2016 after a judge overturned his convictions at the prosecutor's request. The killings were eventually linked to a professional hit man.

Sanford filed a lawsuit last week against the city and two officers involved in his case seeking punitive and compensatory damages.
