Northern Michigan University Shut After Snow; Caution Urged

MARQUETTE (AP) - Authorities in parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula are urging people to avoid traveling the roads after a storm dumped snow on the region.

The National Weather Service says it received reports Monday of more than 5 inches of fresh snow in the Marquette area on Monday. Northern Michigan University in Marquette says it was closed Tuesday due to inclement weather.

Michigan State Police say crews are working to clear major roadways, but some secondary roads in the areas affected by the storm are impassable.

The weather service says a few in inches of fresh snow could fall Tuesday in the northern Lower Peninsula. In the southern Lower Peninsula, including the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas, rain was expected to change to snow — potentially creating hazardous driving conditions.
