Best Memorial Day Walks, Runs And Parades In Detroit

Memorial Day is the time to honor our fallen who served in the U.S. forces and to also appreciate veterans still with us today. In between cooking an American feast outdoors and visiting burial sites honoring those lost, there are parades to enjoy around the Detroit region as well as race events for the family. This guide will get you started finding events for your Memorial Day weekend.

The Grosse Ile Memorial Day Run has been an event for over 30 years and is hosted by the Island Road Runners. The run takes you on a scenic route for either an 8K run or 5K walk/run in which medals will be awarded for several age groups. There will also be raffle prizes along with a goodie table for when the run is over. Registration is $30 through May 20 and increases from there - $40 on the day of the race. Gather the family and enjoy the fun!

If you're around the Plymouth area, there is a parade that will begin at 9 a.m. on Main Street and end at Veteran's Park at Main Street and Church Street. Following the parade, a special tribute will be performed saluting the nation's veterans. The parade solely commemorates Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day proclaimed on May 5, 1868, by Gen. John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republican to honor those who died in the Civil War.

This Memorial Day event spans over the course of the weekend with craft sales, a carnival, refreshment tents and concessions with a DJ and entertainment. Event goers can participate in bingo at the community center while the children can visit a petting farm. The Novi Memorial Day Run is a family event for everyone. Not only can children participate in the 1 Mile event, your furry canines can join in as well! Even better, dogs receive a special bandana for the race. Save $5 on registration by bringing a food donation going towards the St. James Food Pantry. Items requested are canned meats such as tuna or chicken, canned fruit, pasta boxes, and cereal. There will be an awards ceremony for the 10K and 5K runs with a Memorial Day parade to follow.

The Royal Oak Memorial Day Parade has been happening for several decades and is a respectful tribute to veterans both past and present. The parade has been going on for so long that the Royal Oak City Commission formed a special committee to preserve the tradition. The parade which begins at 9:00 a.m. and is regarded as one of the most prestigious parades in Michigan.
