During a ride-along event for the Belle Isle Grand Prix, race Chairman Bud Denker assured fans that the track is race ready. Three Chevy drivers Will Power of Team Penske, Townsend Bell and Simona de Silvestro put the road to the test on the race event media day Monday, May 20.

“We’re just days away from as you mentioned the roar of engines back on Belle Isle.” Denker said confidently.

“Bringing this race back to Detroit has been a labor of love and we’re so proud of that. Roger announced years ago we’re going to do this here we are now making it happen. We spent about 1.8 – 1.9 million dollars on the race track this year getting it ready because we had a few potholes last year if you remember. Those are gone. We’re going to have an unbelievable race plus as the drivers are so excited about we have a brand new straightaways so the fans are going to see a lot more passing a lot more competition a lot more exciting racing going on Belle Isle,” said Denker.

The event will feature two races with the drivers in a first of its kind double-header and driver conditioning will be a factor on who ends up on the podium. Denker explained, “It’s the first time they’ve ever had two races on Belle Isle or two races for IndyCar in the same weekend in the history of the series so we’re going to put these drivers through 70 laps on Saturday, 70 laps on Sunday.”

“Only the fittest in terms of mentally and physically will be the ones that will make this …” said Denker.

The Grand Prix is set for June 1 – 3.

Weather on Belle Isle is unpredictable this time of year ranging from cold rain to scorching heat. How will the weather impact turnout and the race conditions? Denker said, “The fans of course would like to have a little bit of a breeze but for the drivers the cooler the better because it’s easier on their bodies but also the track is not as slick when it’s a little cooler.” “We expect it to be warm like it is here today our engineers are getting ready for that,” he continued.

Free Prix day on Friday is always a big draw for spectators allowing fans to tour the grounds and watch pre-race activities including practice laps and qualifying races.

The land of the free and the home of the brave: That is the mantra that this country was built upon — and when it comes to giving thanks for those freedoms, there is no more important day than Memorial Day.

Memorial Day celebrations are all about barbecues and time outdoors with friends and family, but with a long weekend stretching out ahead, there’s also plenty of time for the great indoors…

Here’s a guide to movies you should make time for.

There are some notable films being released on Memorial Day weekend. The third chapter of ‘The Hangover,’ series, ‘The Hangover 3,” will be released on May 23rd. The film will be the kick-off of Memorial Day weekend and fans will be lined up for a midnight showing. Surprisingly, that film isn’t the only sequel being released that weekend. ‘The Fast & Furious’ series have grown larger over the last few years and the latest addition, “Fast and Furious 6,” will be released on May 24th. Both films have loyal fans and lines will be formed throughout the weekend.

If you don’t want to sit in an overcrowded theater, have no fear, help is here. There are two drive-in theaters that can give you an ambiance of being back in a different time. The Compuware Drive-in Theater in Plymouth has sneak peek showings from May 24th – May 26th. Each screen features back-to-back movies starting at dusk. For more information, call 734-927-3284. Another drive-in destination is the Ford Drive-In that resides in Dearborn. For more information, call 313-846-6910.

The gem to keep someone on the couch comes out on Sunday, May 26th. The cult favorite “Arrested Development,” has built quite the following over the years since it went off the air.
You might not think that the ‘burbs of Detroit have one of the best pulled pork sandwiches around, but think again. Uptown Grille, hidden in Commerce Township between Haggerty Road and M5, may not be known for its sandwiches, but the pulled pork is delicious. It comes smothered in BBQ sauce with your choice of sides, including fries or sweet potato fries (go for the sweet potato). Uptown also has great daily specials, including half-off chicken wings and margaritas on Monday, as well as buy one get one half-off pizzas and half off martinis on Fridays until 7 p.m..

Zingerman’s Roadhouse is the “country cousin” of its downtown Zingerman’s location, which means more BBQ and Southern-style meals. The BBQ pork entree is available for both lunch and dinner, and is pit roasted for 14 hours and blended with your choice of barbecue sauce. It’s also served with mashed potatoes and Southern-style braised greens. BBQ sauce choices include Eastern North Carolina vinegar BBQ sauce, South Carolina mustard BBQ sauce and Memphis tomato BBQ sauce. The Roadhouse also offers pulled pork sandwiches, including sliders, BBQ pulled sandwich and chopped pork BBQ sandwich. On Thursdays, ask for the Blue Plate Special, which includes pulled pork, beef, chicken wings, greens and mashed potatoes, all for just $13.95 (the pulled pork dinner is normally $19.95).

Purchasing a pet from a breeder gives you some assurance that your pet will look and act the way you expect it to, and will live a reasonably long and healthy life. The best breeders are those who continue to learn about their breed of choice, who seek out objective evaluations of their animals to be sure they’re staying true to the breed standard, who do their best to avoid producing pets with genetic health problems and who are available as a resource for their buyers for the life of the pet and beyond. Finding a good breeder may be difficult or easy, depending on the type of pet you want, the breed within that type and the popularity of the breed. These Detroit-area organizations represent breeders of a variety of animals and can help you get started on the path to finding your perfect pet.

The Detroit Kennel Club’s mission is to educate the public about purebred dogs, showcasing the versatility among the various breeds and providing information necessary to make an informed decision when choosing a breeder. The club’s annual benched dog show, first held in 1916, is one of only five benched shows still held in the United States. At a benches show, dogs must stay at their assigned area throughout the entire show, rather than being able to leave when they’re done in the ring as with most shows. This gives the public a unique opportunity to visit with the dogs, get information about various breeds and meet breeders and owners who can help them find a well-bred puppy of their own. With more than 175 AKC-registered breeds, and even more rare breeds, there is bound to be a purebred dog to suit the needs of any owner.

Cat shows allow the public to see and interact with a variety of cat breeds, including mixed and newly developed breeds.

DETROIT (WWJ) – Ever wish you could enjoy an adult beverage accompanied by your favorite furry friend?

That’s the idea behind “Drinking with Dogs” — the brainchild of Canine to Five doggie daycare owner Liz Blondy.

Blondy told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Sandra McNeil she started the Detroit area bar series five years ago as a great way for dog owners to meet other dog owners. She said the program is also good for the economy.

“I feel kind of like, as a small business owner, it’s important to lift up small business owners. That is kind of what we all should be doing for each other,” Blondy said. “So, it’s nice to say, ‘Hey, go spend your money at this independently owned and operated restaurant.’”

Blondy said it’s gotten so successful that establishments are coming to her asking how they can take part.

This year’s series opens on Tuesday, May 12, at 6 p.m. at Fountain Bistro in Campus Park. Other Drinking With Dogs events will take place at Como’s in Ferndale and at the Whitney.

“Another thing that I really like about it is I think that a lot of people really aren’t familiar with some of the venues,” Blondy said. “Or — in the case of the Whitney — people think, ‘Oh, the Whitney — it’s so fancy, it’s too fancy for us’ — when in fact it’s a lovely, mildly casual patio and people really enjoy being out there with their dogs.”

[Check the calendar for the schedule here].

From its selection of body butter to candles and accessories, The Natural Market would be a great place to stop by for a do-it-yourself spa night, and all of its products are 100 percent natural. The store was founded in 2012 by Victoria Roby, a graduate of Wayne State University, who calls Natural Market “the African-American version of Bath & Body Works.” Roby mixes together ingredients such as shea butter, peppermint oil, beeswax and vitamin E for her handmade bath soaks and lip balms.

He and his mother, Laura, started making the fizzies and giving them away as gifts, and soon Bizzy Fizz Bath Treats was born. The store sells handmade bath and body products for a spa day at home, and you can buy the company’s products either in-store or on the website. Bizzy Fizz has more than just bath fizzies.
The time for spring has arrived and everyone is looking for a place to find just a bit of the beauty that the new season brings. Take some time to visit one of the five locations below and you will be sure to find the first blooms of spring, and in one case, the first butterflies of the season.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park
(616) 957-1580
www.meijergardens.org

When it comes to finding spring flowers, or any flowers for that matter, Meijer Gardens is perhaps the best location in the state, if not the region. Located just outside Grand Rapids, it is a bit of a drive for a day trip, but well worth any effort it takes to get there. Being located on one of the main thoroughfares of Grand Rapids, you will be able to find accommodations if you choose and plenty of places to grab a meal. One of the most beautiful and popular early spring events is the “Butterflies are Blooming” exhibit. Over 6,000 tropical butterflies are raised in the conservatory and then released to fly around the 15,000-square-foot Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. If you have never experienced this sort of event, now is your chance.

(517) 431-2060
www.hiddenlakegardens.msu.edu

Hidden Lake is home to some of the most beautiful and varied collections of plant life you will find in southeastern Michigan. On the grounds there is a collection of dwarf and rare conifers, a beautiful collection of flowers on the Hosta Hillside and much more. The conservatory houses three environments; tropical, arid and temperate, each offering a variety of plants to enjoy. There are guided tours for those who would like the company of a knowledgeable expert. But if you want to just take a self-guided tour, head down any time the gardens are open and enjoy all they have to offer.

www.lsa.umich.edu

East of Ann Arbor, you will find the 200-acre U of M Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Conservatory. The grounds offers a variety of plantings, from a children’s garden to herb gardens that you would find at a historic farm. But it is the plantings of beautiful spring and summer flowers that bring people from miles around to walk the trails and pathways of the gardens. In the conservatory, you will find a wide range of different environments along with special shows featuring some of the most beautiful blooms. And inside the main building, there is a small waterfall and a wonderful sculpture of a child. For those who are interested in the future of sustainable energy, there is the U of M energy-efficient home on the grounds which offers a look at what can be done when there is the will to make things a lot more environmentally friendly.

www.lsa.umich.edu

If you are looking for native spring blooms, Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor should be on your list. Each spring, the 27-bed Peony Garden fills the entry way to the Arb with a colorful explosion of blooms unmatched in the area. There is the Gateway Garden of New World Plants that is filled with plants native to the region, presenting a true picture of the variety of species that originally took root in Michigan. The area is filled with trails that lead through habitats that include old growth hardwoods, flowering brush or a stroll along the bank of the Huron River. Since the Arb is located on the campus of U of M, parking can be a challenge at times so it pays to look over the parking information offered on the Arboretum website and to download the visitor’s guide for the area.

Located on Belle Isle, the conservatory is truly a jewel on the island. With over 100,000 square feet of space, you will find varieties of plants that will boggle the mind. There are five separate environments in the building, ranging from a desert room to a tropical rain forest where palm trees reach the ceiling of the dome. The conservatory is also home to one of the largest collection of orchids owned by a municipality in the nation. There are over 600 orchids that came directly from the collection of Ann Scripps Whitcomb, who was a breeder and grower of the beautiful plants.

The Elite Mile race offers cash prizes to the top three finishers, as well as age group winners, and live music (a band and DJ) will be provided at the start of the races.

When it comes to finding off-road areas to enjoy in your 4X4 or on you ORV, the Department of Natural Resources maintains an extensive network of trails. To use them, you will need an ORV sticker available at www.mdnr-elicense.com or from a DNR office or Secretary of State office. There is also a complete listing online of the public trails in the state with descriptions of each area. But if you’re looking for serious adventure, check out these off-roading spots within a few hours of Detroit.

The Mounds Off-Road Park
www.geneseecountyparks.org

When most people think of the Genesee County Parks, they think of birds and hiking trails, But with four-wheelers, it is Mounds Off-Road Park that comes to mind. Considered by many off-roaders to be one of the premier off-road vehicle parks in the Great Lakes region, The Mounds offers challenges for drivers on ATVs, in Jeeps, trucks or just about anything else that is considered to be an off-road vehicle.

www.facebook.com/bundyhill.recreation

One of the newest places to get the tires off the asphalt is Bundies, which offers hill climbs, motocross, sand and mud all to be enjoyed. Unlike some of the commercial areas, at Bundies you can drive anything from ATVs or big 4X4s to sand rails, and the price is right with fees being $15 for an all-day pass for drivers and only $5 for each passenger. For those just getting into off-road driving, there is a beginners’ area to try wheeling around in.

Freelin MX
www.freelinmx.com

From motocross to ATVs, you will find a place at Freelin MX. It is a bit of a drive from Detroit, being located in the “Thumb,” but it is well worth the time. There are over 50 acres of tracks and trails to head down and a full list of services from food to restrooms. Although Freelin MX is known for its motocross competitions, four-wheelers will find a home here too with special events taking place monthly, which are listed on the Freelin MX website.

www.rocksandvalleys.com

One of the newest off-road parks in the state is Rocks and Valleys, located a bit further away but again, well worth the drive. With over 200 acres covered with trails ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, everyone will find a place to wheel. Drivers will find mud to splash through, rocks to climb over and hills to just plain climb. Rates are $20 per driver and $5 for each passenger. A waiver must be filled out and signed before drivers can take to the back roads and can be downloaded at www.rocksandvalleys.com.

No doubt, being near Muskegon, Silver Lake State Park is not close to home, but if you are looking for a place to hit the back roads and the dunes, then this is the place to go. Nearly every location in the state with dunes is closed to ORV travel, but at Silver Lake, you will find a trail system that takes you through the woods and up onto the sand. A Michigan Recreation Passport (formerly state park pass) is required for entry as well as an ORV sticker. This is the place to go if you are seeking the adventure of driving the dunes and there is nowhere else in the state like it.

Oakland (CBS Detroit)- Support literacy programs by participating in the third annual Run2Read event on June 8, 2013 at Stony Creek Metropark. It will feature 5K and 10K runs and a 5K walk along scenic park routes.

The course takes runners through some beautiful scenery including wooded trails, rolling hills, and diverse terrain. Organizers said runners find the variety exciting.

According to runner Maureen Gault, “Last year’s race was a lot of fun. Runners and walkers alike, even tots in strollers, obviously were enjoying the beautiful trail and most of all, the opportunity to help raise funds for literacy in our community. This year, I am sure, will be a great event.”

Run2Read is a joint fund-raiser for Oakland Literacy Council and Macomb Literacy Partners, with proceeds going for the support of free adult literacy education in the two counties.

Oakland Literacy Council President Judy Lindstrom explains, “We provide free individualized tutoring for students who are learning English as a second language as well as for English speakers who wish to improve their reading and writing skills.”

DETROIT (WWJ) When people think “Detroit,” honky tonk isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind.

But PJ’s Lagerhouse in Corktown hopes to change that.

The bar on Michigan Avenue is throwing a birthday party for country legend Waylon Jennings this weekend, hoping to entertain large crowds with down home honky tonk while raising money for a good cause.

The event is a fundraiser for the Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research. ”Waylon Jennings was a country music legend, he died of diabetes,” said PJ Ryder, owner of the Lagerhouse, adding the fund was founded by Jennings’ son and wife and dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes.

Fans across the country celebrate the life, legend and music of Waylon Jennings by holding birthday bashes on or around his June 15 birthday — but this is the only official event in the Midwest.

A $10 cover charge applies for Honky Tonk Throwdown, and PJ Lagerhouse owner PJ Ryder said a special guitar will also be auctioned off to raise money.

And for that price, visitors will get to enjoy a line-up including, among others: Deadstring Brothers; The Sights; Katie Grace; If Birds Could Fly;
Horse Cave Trio; Captain Ivory; Ryan Dillaha; Mary Cutrafella; Fifth on The Floor; Brunswick Brawlers; Crooked Little Reasons; Jeremy Porter and the Tucos; Dock Ellis Band; John Holk; The Greaves; Miles Burning Band; Orbitsuns; Billy Don Burns; Bull Halsey; Behind The Times; Whiskey Charmers; Babe Miller and His 10-4′s; and Gibson Seal.

Moms work hard taking care of their families, and on the second Sunday in May, we take a moment to thank them for the love and care they give so freely throughout the year. Mother’s Day isn’t limited to your own mom, though – the holiday has evolved to include women who have had an influence in your life, whatever the relationship. From a simple flower to a lavish meal, Mother’s Day gives us the opportunity to let others know we appreciate them. Whether it’s your mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin or daughter, Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the important women in your life.

With Easter early this year, for many, Mother’s Day will be the kick-off spring weekend. What better way to celebrate than to treat mom to a bunch of beautiful flowers to brighten up her porch or deck? The Matthei Botanical Gardens at the University of Michigan will hold its annual Mother’s Day Spring Plant Sale weekend on Saturday and Sunday, featuring a wide variety of hanging baskets and containers to suit any budget and style. Admission to the Plant Sale is free; proceeds benefit the Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

DETROIT (WWJ) - You can catch a Michigan actor on stage at Detroit’s Fisher Theatre, starring in the musical “Catch Me If You Can.”

Dominic Fortuna, who grew up in the Detroit area and still lives in Northern Michigan, plays the part of Frank Abagnale, Senior, the dad of a conman who passed himself off as a pilot, doctor and lawyer before he was even 21. That character was played by Leonardo DeCaprio in the film version.

Did Fortuna think the movie would make a good musical?

“Once you catch this and see what the show’s about, and how they’ve made it into a Broadway show, you’ll see the genius involved in the creative team, and how they’ve put that together,” Fortuna told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Greg Bowman.

“It still involves you as a Broadway musical, but it has a great book behind it and a true story. So the combination of them both has actually made a very good musical,” Fortuna said.

Fortuna said people love the show wherever they go.

“This is like our 30th or 31st city and … in a lot of them — several different cities — people have said this was just a great experience. We had no idea; we didn’t know what to expect. This was our favorite show so far out of all the Broadway series shows that have come here,” he said.

ROYAL OAK (CBS Detroit) – If you or someone you know is looking to adopt a pet, then look no further than the Detroit Zoo.

The Detroit Zoo and Michigan Humane Society, in collaboration with more than 20 local animal welfare organizations, are hosting the 21st annual spring Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo.

It happens 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 17, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 18. At this event, hundreds of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens will be available for adoption.

Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo will take place outdoors under tents in the Zoo’s front parking lot beneath the landmark water tower. This event is presented by Purina One, supported by PetSmart Charities and is free of charge. However, regular admission and parking fees apply for everyone visiting the zoo.

Since puppies are usually in high demand, “puppy passes” will be given to the first 25 adoption event guests on Saturday morning who are looking to adopt a puppy. The “puppy passes” will allow those to enter the adoption tents at 9:45 a.m.

Adoption fees and policies are set by each participating group. In order to adopt, guests must have a valid driver’s license or state ID card. All animals will have received a medical checkup and age-appropriate vaccinations and there will be a “get-acquainted” area that will give adopters an opportunity to spend time with an animal before adopting. All current companion animals should be left at home for safety and health reasons.

Last year, the Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo event found homes for 431 animals. Since the event’s rise in 1993, more than 18,000 dogs, cats, and rabbits have been placed into new homes at the spring and fall events.

The Detroit Zoological Society is a nonprofit organization that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Zoo. Situated on 125 acres of naturalistic habitats, the Detroit Zoo is located at the intersection of 10 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue, just off I-696, in Royal Oak.

The Detroit Zoo is open 362 days a year, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April through Labor Day (with extended hours until 8 p.m. Wednesdays during July and August), 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the day after Labor Day through October and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. November through March. Admission is $14 for adults 15 to 61, $12 for senior citizens 62 and older, and $9 for children 2 to 14 (children under 2 are free).

For more information, call 248-541-5717 or visit www.detroitzoo.org.

In early April, the Detroit X Games Team released a short video to support their bid to host the 2014-2016 X Games. A number of fans were wanting a longer version of the teaser video. Action Sports Detroit, the organizer of the bid, has delivered. On Wednesday, May 8 they released a second video via its Facebook page. Currently the first video has more than 15 thousand views on YouTube and the X Games Detroit Bid has more than 5000 likes on Facebook. The video is designed to increase its fan base and support for bringing the extreme sports competition to the city.

Video Released For Detroit X Games Bid

ESPN, the creator of the X Games, last month announced that after 10 years the Games will move from its original Los Angeles location. After an intense grassroots campaign, Detroit was one of four cities winning bidding rights to host the ESPN X Games for three consecutive years beginning in 2014. Chicago, Austin and Charlotte are the other three finalist cities.

Action Sports Detroit Founder and Director Kevin Krease and Managing Partner Garret Koehler, the driving force behind the effort to bring the X Games to Detroit, said the video is just one piece of a grass roots campaign.

“We’re thrilled that the ESPN X Games team gave Detroit a shout out as ‘the most vociferous in its desire to host the games,’ ” said Koehler.

The X Games belong in Detroit,” added Koehler.

Detroit-based production house The Work produced the video.

“The Work was an early partner in this process because they grasped our vision, identified with it, and clearly had the skill set to help us share it with others in a poignant way. It’s been surreal watching them turn a crazy coffee shop idea into this amazing video,” said Krease.

Dan Gilbert, Founder and Chairman of Rock Ventures and Quicken Loans and one among a list of sponsors supporting the bid, said the team’s just-released video helps demonstrate why the X Games and Detroit are a perfect fit.

“Detroit was made for the X Games,” said Gilbert. “Our urban core is composed of young, diverse and creative people.
Mother’s Day will be here soon, and you’ve decided to make your mom or wife some delicious brunch delicacies. But what to make? Read below for some ideas from a local chef.

Three Potato Hash with Poblano, Canadian Bacon and Onion Topped with Poached Farm Eggs and Whole Grain Mustard Aioli

Notes: You can go pork free if desired. Also, fried eggs work just fine. We make our own Canadian Bacon at The Root, which is basically brined, smoked pork loin. When choosing meat, dairy, eggs and produce, it is best to request/demand local. Knowing where your food comes from is invaluable.

Hash

1.5 lbs yukon gold potatoes, rinsed

1.5 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled

1.5 lbs russet potatoes, rinsed in hot water and scrubbed aggressively

2 medium-size poblano peppers

1 large Spanish onion

12 oz. Canadian bacon or ham, diced same size as potatoes

4 cloves garlic

1 Tbsp thyme

3/4 cup very nice olive oil, preferably Spanish

2 heaping Tbsp smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Clean potatoes, peel the sweet potatoes and dice into no bigger than half-inch cubes. Put in a large bowl.

Clean the poblanos and remove seeds. Dice into small, close to tiny squares. Dice onion very finely.

Mince garlic cloves. Add everything to the bowl of potatoes. Pick thyme off the sprig and lightly chop. Add to potatoes.

Add olive oil, paprika, salt and pepper. Toss together.

Add more oil if it appears dry. Add more salt or pepper if necessary. Don’t be afraid to taste raw potato for seasoning adjustment.

Dice your Canadian Bacon or Ham the same size as the potatoes and set aside.

Roast the seasoned potato mixture in a 400 degree F oven in a pyrex or on a clean cookie sheet, preferably with a convection fan for about 30 minutes until the largest potato dice is fully cooked.

Pull out of oven. Let cool slightly at room temperature. Meanwhile, make your whole grain mustard aioli (recipe below).

Whole Grain Mustard Aioli

1 shallot, diced

5 egg yolks

2 Tbsp whole grain mustard

1 lemon, squeezed

3 whole garlic cloves, roasted

3/4 cup blended oil

Dash of Tabasco

Salt to taste

Directions:

Roast a head of garlic by cutting off the tapered papery end and drizzle it with olive oil, wrapping it in foil and baking for an hour or so at 350 degrees F.

Let cool. Add everything except the oil to a food processor. Begin to puree. Slowly drizzle in oil.

When finished, season to taste. Scrape into small dish. Set aside.

Combining the hash and whole grain mustard aioli:

Bring a pot of salted water to just below a simmer.

Add a capful of white distilled vinegar. Keep just below a simmer.

In a large sauté pan, caramelize the bacon or ham in 2 Tbsp of butter. Once it begins to caramelize, add the hash to the pan. Toss until fully heated and well seasoned. Feel free to add more olive oil, herbs, spinach or anything else you like.

When hot, spoon onto large platter or onto individual plates.

Immediately crack however many eggs you desire into the simmering salted, vinegar water. Be gentle and drop them slowly into the water. If you are careful to not drop the eggs on top of each other, they will have no problem cooking side by side.

Do not boil. In about a minute or less they should float. If they don’t, gently nudge them with a long slotted spoon. If you prefer runny yolks, pull them at about a minute once they float.

Place eggs on top of hash. Scoop a dollop of the whole grain mustard aioli on top of the egg or to the side of it or serve it on the side. Fresh-cut chives or parsley make a lovely garnish.

Espresso Bean and Almond Macaroons

7 oz. almond paste

2.5 oz. powdered sugar

2.5 oz. granulated sugar

1 oz. pastry flour

1.5 oz. egg white

20 or so espresso beans

Directions:

Add all ingredients except espresso beans to a KitchenAid and mix with a paddle on medium speed until fully incorporated.

Line a cookie sheet with a silpat or wax paper. Roll into ping pong-sized balls. Place on paper. Lightly press down. Place one espresso bean per cookie in the center.

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees, no fan, for approximately 10 minutes.

Do not let these cookies brown. You are looking for a light tanning around the edges and that is it. They overcook easily. Let cool. Serve with French pressed coffee.

“Mamamosa”

2 oz. fresh-squeezed blood orange juice

1 oz. Lillet blanc

Dash of orange bitters

M. Lawrence Detroit Sparkling Wine

Directions:

This drink is best served ice cold in a champagne flute.

Freeze your champagne flute ahead of time. If you own a martini shaker, you can shake the juice, Lillet blanc and bitters with ice and strain into chilled flute. If not, make sure everything is refrigerated before mixing.

Once the juice, Lillet blanc and bitters are in the flute, top off with M. Lawrence “Detroit” Sparkling wine or another slightly sweet sparkling wine/champagne. Enjoy.
