Dust Tornadoes, Icy Mountain Winds Can’t Stop UM Student And His Tent

Disaster struck on the first day of Andrew McCarthy’s expedition to climb Aconcagua — the tallest mountain in the Western Hemisphere. The graduate student in architecture at the University of Michigan had just pitched the tent that he made himself in a valley when a 40-foot-tall dust tornado kicked up a rock and sent it flying into the side of the dwelling, puncturing a fist-sized hole in a side panel.
