Detroit City Council is getting lots of suggestions for creating revenue-generating businesses on Belle Isle now that a state proposal to lease the island was rejected.
Detroit City Councilman Gary Brown said Saturday morning on Twitter that he’s still hopeful that conversations with the state can be revived.
Detroit City Councilman James Tate says some have threatened to run him out of office.
Councilman Tate says he felt the lease option with the state was in the best interest of the citizens of the city.
Gov. Rick Snyder has withdrawn an offer by the state to lease Belle Isle from Detroit.
One resident called the council members “Judas,” for considering the lease, adding, “It has one jewel in it and you’re going to take it. Are we ignorant?”
There could be another vocal public hearing Monday about the proposed lease of Belle Isle to the state .
Glass blowers from around the country auctioned off all their creations to benefit the Belle Isle Aquarium.
The state has committed to upgrading the 985-acre park, which has blight and maintenance issues and is not a destination for many outside the city.
Rod Lockwood would like to see the island sold to private investors for one billion dollars so it can be turned in to a U.S. commonwealth, with its own laws and currency.
