A member of Congress wants Michiganders to speak out against a Canadian proposal to store nuclear waste underground less than a mile from Lake Huron.
A Michigan congressman says there now are 43 co-sponsors of his resolution saying Iran should immediately release jailed ex-Marine Amir Hekmati and all other Americans in its custody.
Amir Hekmati was arrested in August 2011 while visiting his grandmothers and sentenced to death for spying, but he later was convicted of “cooperating with hostile governments” and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The company says the facility would be safe and wouldn’t leak. Opponents say there’s no way to guarantee that for the thousands of years that the waste would remain radioactive.
Efforts to end the partial government shutdown remain at a standstill, and state lawmakers speak out from both sides of the political isle.
Michigan U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee says he wants to raise awareness about proposed cuts in nutrition programs for low-income families and children.
