Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s North Terminal was evacuated on Saturday “out of an abundance of caution to investigate a suspicious situation.”
Motorists were urged to avoid the area of West Fort Street, between Washington and Cass.
Residents at a nursing home in Westland were briefly evacuated because of smoke in the building.
Detroit Police say a backpack near the McDonalds at Grand River and Schaefer looked suspicious, so patrons and employees were evacuated while the scene was investigated.
Police say the evacuation was “precautionary,” but could not disclose the reason behind it.
The evacuation was ordered early Friday morning after a chemical spill in a research lab.
