Security at Michigan prisons has apparently gotten weaker in the six weeks since food service operations were handed over to a private contractor.
State officials reversed themselves Tuesday in deciding to hire a private company to prepare food for Michigan’s 44,000 prisoners, saying they originally misjudged a plan that would actually save the state about $16 million.
Maintaining security is an issue in privatization of services such as feeding prisoners as the state looks to cut millions of dollars from incarceration-related costs.
