Authorities say it could be quite some time before an intersection in Plymouth reopens to traffic following a gas leak.
Due to the natural gas leak, surrounding homes have been evacuated and the roadways at 23 Mile and Ryan have been closed until further notice.
Authorities are searching for two suspects who stole a car from a gas station on Detroit’s northwest side and crashed into a gas meter, causing a gas leak in the area.
While the scent of gas filled the air, a Consumers Energy representative told WWJ Newsradio 950, there was no immediate danger to those in the area of Middlebelt and Long Lake.
Officials say the explosion happened shortly after crews from Consumers Energy arrived to investigate the possible gas leak.
At least 25 people were showered off in the parking lot, while a hazardous materials response team, paramedics and firefighters were called to the park
Officials were forced to close 8 Mile Road after a gas leak was discovered in a storm drain.
Repairs are expected to take two to three hours.
The situation unfolded Wednesday morning at Carlysle and Mayfair streets, near Outer Drive.
Authorities say the homeowner was digging with a backhoe close to the home and hit a gas line.
