For all the talk about Matthew Stafford and how quickly he would pick up a new system in Detroit, it was easy to forget one crucial factor.
The Detroit Lions opened the season at home for Monday Night Football, vanquishing the New York Giants with relative ease, led by an impressive Matthew Stafford.
“We just felt it was kind of to honor Mr. Ford in his passing,” Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said.
Stafford improvised brilliantly on two early touchdown passes to Johnson, and Detroit beat the Giants in Jim Caldwell’s first game as Lions coach.
Lions safety James Ihedigbo is inactive for Monday night’s game against the New York Giants, leaving Detroit’s suspect secondary short-handed for the season opener.
Caldwell said last week the Lions would not name season-long captains and instead appoint the honors on a game-by-game basis.
