Subaru is recalling the cars because a malfunction can stop the front passenger air bag from inflating in a crash.
“The companies should be willing to step up and take responsibility for their products,” said Mark Rechtin, the magazine’s cars content team leader.
A recall from last year for the same problem didn’t work due to incomplete repair instructions to dealers.
The cars were chosen for value, fuel economy, safety and style.
Subaru of America is recalling more than 47,000 cars and SUVs with remote starters because the engines can start on their own.
