UM Slashes Water Used For Irrigation With New System

Installation of a water-conserving irrigation system has helped the University of Michigan reduce the amount of water used on irrigation by 68 percent, saving an estimated $141,000 a year.

GR Sustainability Partnership Sets 2011 Goals

The greater Grand Rapids Community Sustainability Partnership has formed a new leadership team, appointed by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, Grand Valley State University President Thomas J. Haas, and Grand Rapids Community College President Steven C. Ender, and has set goals for 2011 to help maintain Grand Rapids’ status as the most sustainable mid-size city in the U.S.

Report Shows UM Campus Growth Up — But Energy Use Down

While the University of Michigan grew last year at a rapid 8-percent clip — including the campus’ largest physical expansion in 60 years — its aggressive sustainability efforts have simultaneously cut normalized energy use by 4 percent, water use by 3 percent and resulted in a decrease in per-person trash levels of nearly 5 percent, according to the institution’s Sustainability Annual Report.
