I’ve had a chance to talk with many fellow Detroiters during TIFF 2012’s opening weekend, and the good stuff is always described the same way: it grabs hold of you.

In fact, at one point in the exhilarating Kon-Tiki, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl says to a member of his crew – who, by the way, has agreed, in 1947, to cross the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft – “This is bigger than us.”
As the Detroit Film Theatre’s Curator of Film, Elliot Wilhelm, reminded a group of us Detroiters at a breakfast gathering this morning, you can see just about anything at TIFF. And, the cross-section of genres and film styles offered this year is second to none.
