Best Video Stores In Detroit
Thomas Video & DVD
4732 Rochester Road
Royal Oak, MI 48073

The Metro Detroit area's first video store, and maybe the first in the world, started in 1974 in Royal Oak selling movies on 8mm film! Then they were among the first to rent movies on Beta and VHS, then sell movies on tape, followed by Laserdisc and the RCA disc system. Today they also feature DVD and BluRay discs. Owned and operated for a few decades now by two of the stores first employees, the store, in its third location, is home to an eclectic mix of new and used movies on tape, DVD, BluRay and Laserdisc. It's a film nut's heaven and a collector's paradise with a super deep selection of films to dig through. And if they don't have it, they can probably order it. All genres are covered and they specialize in foreign and cult favorites. This is the kind of video store that movies are made about where the owners and clerks really know their stuff and are fun to talk to!
Movie Mania Metro
18251 W Warren Ave
Detroit, MI 48228
(313) 982-1500
Be assured -- the name suggests an insane selection not a tragic movie related psychosis. One of the few indie rental shops left, this place is located just west of the Southfield Freeway in the village of Warrendale. It's a local favorite.
Video Exclusive
6609 Telegraph Road
Dearborn Heights, MI 48127
(313) 278-4446
Video Exclusive resembles the big chains, but also is close in spirit to many of the older stores that used to be in the area. You can find quite a large number of copies of new releases and the slower renting titles are often for sale at a used price. There are also several bargain bins and racks to peruse. Plenty of titles and genres covered here (a deeper selection than most stores and many, older, hard to find titles) with a big foreign film section and a large TV series DVD section available for rental! Bonus: If you want the whole season of a TV show you won't have to pay for each disc. In other words, you'll get all the discs for one low rate.
Family Video
22610 Northline
Taylor, MI 48180
(734) 287-8410

Of the corporate chains Family Video seems to be the favorite in Detroit. You'll find the typical selection and low prices including deep discounts on old videos. This location on the south side of Taylor is conveniently located on the corner of Pardee Rd. and Northline Rd across from the Emerald Square strip mall.
