Best Fitness Classes In Metro Detroit

Many people choose fitness as their #1 resolution each new year. Check this list for the best fitness classes to help you with your goals.

Orangetheory Fitness is located in Canton but also recently opened a Birmingham location, in the Adams Square Shopping Center. The studio boasts the "Orange Effect," which helps you burn more calories even after you're done with your workout. Orangetheory offers 60-minute workouts that are split into both cardio and strength training, and they include heart rate monitors to "track intensity and maximize metabolic burn." Its Canton location is on Ford Road near Haggerty and 275, if that is more convenient.

Bad Boy Gym has a few locations, including Shelby Twp. and Macomb. At the Royal Oak location, check out the cardio kickboxing at 9:30 a.m. seven days a week, or at 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. You can become a gym member, or its walk-in fee is $15. The gym recently added a new weight room, as well, with various equipment, and a "Military Room" with kettlebells, sledge hammers and tractor tires. Bad Boy Gym also has a boxing room and other types of classes such as aerobics and Pilates.

Vixen Fitness offers "pole dance and sensual movement classes," and they run from beginner to advanced. Vixen Fitnesswas started in 2007 by Danielle Green, a Detroit native. Pricing ranges from $25 a la carte to $170 for a Gold membership, which includes 12 classes per month, free bottled water, unlimited "pole play" and more. Workshops, ranging from lap dances to stripteases, are also offered.

Syphus Training was developed by Mike Hackett, and is a "high-intensity circuit regimen" that rewards people for efforts and also allows you to work at your own rate. It uses body weight strength and cardio, in "progressive circuit training," as Hackett has named it. Your first drop-in class is free, and after that classes are $20/per, or you can purchase a 10-class package ($150) or a membership ($150/month) which includes many benefits, such as 24 initial classes, 12 additional classes per month, etc. Private coaching (similar to personal training) is also available. There is an additional Syphus location in Harrison Township, as well.

Motor City CrossFit has two locations, the Sterling Heights one listed above and one on Harper Road in St. Clair Shores. It works in that your workout is customized to your own level of ability, and it advertises "personal training at group class rates." Rates range from $100-$150/month, based on the amount of classes you want ($100 for two classes/week, $135 for three/week and $150 for unlimited). A "Sheep Dog" discount of 30% is also available for any currently serving or alumni for those who are firefighters, in the military or on the police force.
