Summer is officially here when the little custard stand opens up around the corner. Head to Erma’s, Bob Jo’s or Wally’s to satisfy your craving for custard.

Summer is officially here when the little ice cream stand opens up around the corner. Don’t get it confused though. This article is about frozen custard, not soft serve. Frozen custard usually contains egg, tastes more rich and has a little less sugar than a typical soft serve ice cream.

Erma’s has been serving up delicious treats since 1942. They offer weekly flavors including two custard flavors plus a non-dairy option called Erma’s Ice. Check the website for the schedule of flavors. The original location is just outside downtown Utica, Michigan. They’ve opened an additional location at 14 and Dequindre in Warren. Be aware that during peak hours you’ll probably have to wait in line. Try to visit during weekdays and before 5 p.m. for shorter wait times. Open April through October.

What is it with ice cream stands being opened in the 1940’s? A gem of the Downriver area of Detroit. Fans will tell you that you have to get the chocolate. It’s the superior flavor and a cut above other ice cream shops’ version. Beware — cash only.

Fans vouch for the frozen custard, saying that it’s smooth, rich and just the right flavor. As the name indicates, you can also grab some hot food while you’re here, which isn’t something you can say about most frozen custard stands.
