Best Memorial Day Events For The Family In Metro Detroit

Memorial Day is a day to honor veterans of the United States, those lost and those living. Many people also celebrate the holiday week with great food, cookouts, carnivals and parades. The Detroit area offers many family-friendly, fun events for the celebration of this great nation. Here's a guide to finding Memorial Day activities in the Metro Detroit Are.

The Hazel Park Memorial Festival is an annual event that takes place at Green Acres Park and around the community center located nearby. Events include a carnival midway, a craft show, live entertainment and a parade. Tickets cost $1, or you can purchase 50 for $40. Thursday and Friday, the festival runs from 4 p.m. to close, and a daily armband can be purchased for $20. On Saturday and Sunday, the festival is open from noon to close with armbands priced at $23, and on Memorial Day, activities are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with armbands also priced at $23.

For those who love history, the Civil War Remembrance is a time to honor the lives lost during that period of American history. With hundreds of Union and Confederate reenactors, musicians, civilians and historian insights, the honoring event features exhibits, artillery demonstrations, presentations and hands-on activities. Tickets are $26 for ages 13+, $19.50 for ages 5-12 and free for children under 4. The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 and 9:30 to 5 p.m. on Monday with $6 parking.

The Movement Electronic Music Festival is an annual event celebrating its 10 year anniversary, making it even more special. Because of the special anniversary, the event runs for three days through Memorial Day in Detroit's Hart Plaza at Detroit's riverfront park. This event is more ideal for older teens and adults and begins at noon on May 28 and runs through 12 a.m. on Memorial Day with an extensive lineup. Plan a weekend with other events, and spend the whole day at the music fest. Tickets can be purchased here.

While out and about on Memorial Weekend, stop in at Warren's Greatest Garage Sales located at the Square Parking Garage on Van Dyke Ave., north of 12 Mile. Find furniture, antiques and collectables, toys, clothing and jewelry. Other vendors will be present, such as Avon, Scentsy and Tupperware. Anyone looking to sell at the sale can rent a spot, with the price ranging from $10 to $130. Admission is $1 to the event

The Greater Rochester Heritage Days has been around for decades and is celebrating another year at the Rochester Municipal Park. Activities include a craft show, live animals, car shows and food vendors. A Civil War encampment, historical displays and lumberjack shows are also part of the yearly fest. Heritage Days will take place no matter rain or shine and is suitable for the whole family.
