Five Reasons To Visit Detroit In 2015

Mark your calendars. From auto racing and design to innovators in tech and music, Detroit is playing host to a variety of awesome events in 2015. June finds the city hosting the first ever World Cup of Gardening on Belle Isle, which will also serve as the backdrop to the Grand Prix in May. If rockstar tech is more your style, make plans to attend Techweek, an event featuring the top players in the tech game. Underground music fans will converge on Hart Plaza for Movement, while the must-attend event for creatives and beyond, the Detroit Design Festival, is happening in September.

Techweek is an extravaganza of startups and established firms converging to explore thoughts, opportunities and entertainment. This dynamic tech conference brings together the best thinkers and leaders across numerous fields in a week-long festival which also includes live music, demonstrations, cutting-edge fashions and more. The original event took place in Chi-town in 2011, and has since expanded to include multiple locations, and will set up shop in Detroit in April.

Thousands of attendees from anywhere you can imagine gather at Hart Plaza for three days of music and dancing. Fans of the EDM scene will revel in the fact that Movement has consistently stayed true to its roots and features under-the-radar musicians and cornerstones who propelled electronic music into what it is today. This unparalleled experience has been a celebratory kick-off to summer since it began in 2000. Multiple stages pump out soul-shattering electronic music from hundreds of acts over the course of Memorial weekend.

Belle Isle Grand Prix

Speed over to Belle Isle to catch a glimpse of drivers convening in Detroit for a chance to go for the gold in this popular automobile racing competition. Witness raceway greats as they make their way around the speedway in a flash. Participate in a variety of special activities that take place on Belle Isle during the three-day racing event. Featured vehicles include sports cars, trucks, Indy cars and notable classics. In addition to the seven races. there's live music, guest appearances, games and interactive displays.

This is an international flower show on steroids. Imagine meticulously planned gardens and landscapes created from the minds of renown designers from around the globe. Then there's the 200 expected vendors that will set up shop, slinging plants and botanical products to attendees. It's estimated that crowds could potentially reach 100,000. According to the non-profit behind the horticulture exhibition, "The World Cup of Gardening will connect international award-winning landscape artists and their living art with under-served neighborhoods and aims to bring to Belle Isle the most beautiful garden show in the world."

Detroit Design Festival

The Detroit Design Festival is one of the best design festivals across the nation. Art and design join forces in this visual display of creative talent. The packed roster of events and activities includes workshops, interactive art displays and discussions. Artists from all disciplines create installations, projects and performances which are scattered throughout the city, spanning a week-long timeframe. A kick-off party starts the festival off with a bang, culminating in the wrap-up event, signaling the closure of the festival until next fall rolls around.
