Ken Ken Improves Math Skills

The game of Ken Ken, imported from Japan, is a great way to sharpen kids arithmetic skills.

Using rows of numbers, players need to add, subtract, multiply and divide to solve the puzzle. Puzzles come in different sizes and ability levels, so that elementary students might tackle a 4 x 4 puzzle, while middle and high school kids might work their way up to an 8 by 8.

At the New York Times, six new Ken Ken puzzles are presented each day for free, with computerized checking of answers for quick results. So try one with your kids, or try one yourself – they are a workout for your math muscles.
