Hawaii Wildlife Center Official To Help In Michigan Oil Spill Cleanup Efforts

The Hawaii Wildlife Center is sending its president and director to Michigan to assist in cleanup efforts involving an oil spill in the Kalamazoo River.

Linda Elliott says that she is collaborating with Focus Wildlife as its onsite animal care manager.

The spill involving a ruptured Enbridge Inc. pipeline was reported July 26.

The rupture has led to the release of an estimated 820,000 to more than 1 million gallons of oil. Enbridge and the Environmental Protection Agency say the cleanup is progressing well.

Elliott says each oil spill, no mater how small, is potentially catastrophic to wildlife. She says the Michigan spill underscores the importance of having immediate emergency wildlife response resources.
