Shooting In Eastpointe

A dramatic scene in Eastpointe Thursday afternoonr, where there was a shooting near a busy Big Boy restaurant on Gratiot near Nine Mile.

An officer was wounded and his assailant was hospitalized with a gunshot wound following a shoot out outside Big Boy's Restaurant at Gratiot and Nine Mile.

"What we had was undercover officers from the city of Dearborn had a vehicle and a suspect under surveillance that was known to break into vehicles and commit other assorted crimes," said Eastpointe Police Chief Michael Lauretti.

The Dearborn surveillance team followed the suspect to the restaurant parking lot.

"He broke into a vehicle right in front of the officers and as the officers were trying to get over to arrest him, he got back in his vehicle and fled, running over the officer, striking the officer. The officer was injured," said Lauretti.

But the injured officer did manage to shoot the suspect, who is now in custody.

WWJ's listener Mike Schneider saw the suspect being taken from the scene.

"He was hurt because they put him on the stretcher, they had him strapped to the stretcher and I saw a bandage on his head," said Schneider.

Schneider says in his 10 years in the area, he has never seen anything like this.
