UAW Pulls Retreat Off Market

The United Auto Workers has pulled a 1,000-acre lakeside retreat in northern Michigan off the market.

John Karver, a senior vice president at real estate firm CB Richard Ellis, tells The Detroit News the Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center was taken off the market at the request of UAW President Bob King and the union's new executive board.

The center named for the union's iconic leader is in Onaway, about 215 miles north-northwest of Detroit. The listing included the Black Lake Golf Club and the ashes of Reuther and his wife, who died along with four others when their small plane crashed en route to the property in 1970.

U.S. Labor Department filings indicate the facility lost $23 million in the past five years.

UAW officials did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
