Spirit Of Detroit Statue Goes Back-To-School

The "Spirit of Detroit'' statue officially goes back to school today.

The 26-foot-tall bronze sculpture in downtown Detroit will wear an oversized "I'm In, We're In'' T-shirt as part of the Detroit public school district's enrollment campaign. The shirt took 300 square feet of fabric to make. The district is trying to meet an enrollment goal of more than 77,000 students.

The statue, located on Woodward Avenue near the entrance of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center downtown, will wear the T-shirt through September 1 and will serve as a focal point during the district's Back to School Parade and Rally, set for Thursday Aug. 26. The parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. south of Grand Circus Park at Woodward Ave. and John R and end at the Hart Plaza Amphitheater, where a rally follows.
