Salmonella Found On 2 Iowa Egg Farms

The massive recall of more than half a billion eggs began Aug. 13 when Wright County recalled 380 million eggs due to a salmonella outbreak. Hillandale Farms recalled 170 million eggs a week later.

Wright County is a sprawling plant based in Galt, Iowa with seven million chickens that produce 5.5 million eggs a day. Hillandale Farms is also based in Iowa. The Centers for Disease Control has said the recalled eggs have been linked to more than 1,300 reported cases of salmonella poisoning, and the number would likely grow.

The cause of the outbreak is still unknown, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
