Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for an airman from the Battle Creek area who died in Iraq.

Flags are to be lowered Friday in honor of Senior Airman James A. (Jimmy) Hansen of Athens. The 25-year-old died Sept. 15 during a  “controlled demolition” at Joint Base Balad.

Hansen was a member of the 46th Operations Support Section at Elgin Air Force Base in Florida. He graduated in 2003 from Athens High School.

His brother says Hansen was a few classes short of his bachelor’s degree in public administration at Central Michigan University.

Visitation is scheduled for Friday at the Athens High gymnasium, and a funeral service is set for Saturday at St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek.
