DSO To Update Status Of Musicians' Strike

Management of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra will hold a news conference at 10:15 Wednesday morning at Orchestra Hall to update the status of upcoming concerts in the wake of a strike by DSO musicians.

The walkout has entered its third day and no negotiations are scheduled. Musicians went out on strike after rejecting management's call for deep pay reductions of up to 30 percent.

Management says the DSO is facing a nine million dollar budget shortfall and concessions are necessary. Musicians say drastic pay cuts could cause the best players to leave the symphony. Both sides contend the top priority is to keep the DSO in the top tier of symphony orchestras.

No concerts have been cancelled thus far, but the DSO has a Thursday night performance scheduled in East Lansing, plus a weekend event at Orchestra Hall, and musicians would need at least one day of rehearsals prior to each performance.
