Woman, Baby Rescued From Apartment Fire

Southfield fire crews rescued a woman and her baby as fire raged at an apartment complex near Shiawassee and Beech roads, just north of Eight Mile Road.

Two units at the Riverstone complex burned, with flames shooting high into the air, but firefighters were able to have the fire under control in about a half hour, according to WWJ's traffic reporter Bill Szumanski, who was watching the activity from Chopper 950.

"Immediately the firefighters were confronted with several rescues to perform," Southfield Fire Chief Peter Healy told WWJ's Vickie Thomas. "We took a mother and baby off a balcony and we had another victim in a corner apartment there and transported him to Botsford Hospital."

WWJ's Vicki Thomas spoke with resident, Desmeona Phillips, "It was like huge, it was the first fire I've ever seen up close, but very huge."

Another neighbor in the complex, Joe Hale, woke up to a loud knock at his door, "They were knocking on everyone's door saying there was a fire and to get out."

The condition of the man taken Botsford and later transferred to U of M Hospital is unknown.
Investigators are trying to determine a cause.
