Fatal Accident In Superior Township

Alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in an accident that killed one person Sunday morning in Superior Township.

Washtenaw County Sheriff spokesman Derrick Jackson says a Chevy HHR and a Ford Escort were stopped at the red light on Ford Road at Plymouth near M-14 when the accident happened.

"A Chevy pickup truck came off the expressway moving at a pretty high rate of speed and just as the light was turning green and those two vehicles were taking off, the pickup truck rear-ended them, causing the death of the one driver of the Ford Escort, and some injuries to the woman who was driving the Chevy HHR," said Jackson.

Jackson says both drivers of the pickup and Chevy HHR were taken to a local hospital for their non-life threatening injuries.

He says the driver of the pickup is believed to have been drunk and speeding.

"I think it just serves, unfortunately, as another reminder of how important it is that if you're going to be out drinking or having a good time and getting intoxicated or anything like that, that when you get behind the wheel of a car how serious it is," said Jackson.

The driver of the pickup is expected to face charges in the crash.

The intersection was closed for several hours.
