Tugs Work To Free Vessel

More tug boats were expected to arrive Sunday to help free a freighter that ran aground in the Trenton Channel near Grosse Ile.

The U.S. Coast Guard says the 579-foot long McKee Sons tug and barge, out of Cleveland, was trying to dock at the DTE facility when it ran aground Friday morning.

The Coast Guard says the plan is to have multiple tugs pull the freighter free and see it safely moored to the Detroit Edison Pier, its intended destination.

An investigation is underway into how the ship became stuck.

Four tug boats were working to free the vessel Friday, but seven were expected to be involved in the operation on Sunday.
